Yes, you read that right. 2017. Not a typo. Bear with me, I can explain… or you can always just skip this bit and go straight to the pictures, they’re what it’s all about after all.

I’m scrolling through instagram on New Year’s Eve and I see a post from one of my past couples – showing a bottle of fizz, two glasses and in the background, on their telly, was the slideshow of images I’d made for them after I photographed their wedding… over 4 years ago. How awesome and lovely, I think.  I rarely get a glimpse into the life of these images once they’ve left my hands… how they they become part of family life, evenings in together, yearly traditions, celebrations. It really stayed with me.

Then I started to put together my 2018 highlights and found my 2017 collection sitting there – pretty much finished but never published. I was pretty annoyed at myself. Last year was busy with weddings and other shoots, travel, and all the stuff that goes into running a business… alongside family life, raising an adorable, hilarious, sleep-rejecting toddler. When it came to work I focused on bringing my best to every single shoot, delivering my best images, connecting to the moments in front of me and making people as happy as I possibly could. So some things (blog, car hoovering, haircuts.. to name a few) went undone.  As someone who likes to get ‘everything’ done, this caused me a fair bit of of mental strife. But hey, I had the important bases covered, and I got pretty good at cutting my own fringe.

I was just going to leave it there, unpublished, shrouded in my guilt. Then I looked through the pictures, and couldn’t stop smiling. So many great moments, happy faces, emotional moments, wild dance floor scenes… they’re brilliant memories of a great year doing what what I do, with the most wonderful people. Who so often remind me what life is really about, without ever knowing that they’re doing me a big favour by doing so. And I remembered the instagram post and realised that the timing doesn’t really matter. This might not be a collection of my most recent work (though that is coming!), but the pride I have in these images doesn’t have an expiration date. These images have long gone off to live with their families, hopefully for a very, very long time. And the days and people they tell stories about will stay with me forever too.

So basically, I had a word with myself and here it is, late but full of love. Some of my personal favourites from the year before last.  Massive thanks as ever to everyone everyone who put their trust in me and invited me into their wedding, I am as incredibly grateful now as I was then.

I love to travel and it’s always such a buzz (and a huge honour) to be asked to get on a plane to photograph a wedding and having shot one in Stockholm only a month before I was feeling very lucky to find myself in Mallorca for this celebration. I’m so grateful to James and Laura for asking me to take these pictures for them, watching good friends and family come together to celebrate with them was such a treat and something I’ll never forget.

Cap Rocat is a place like no other.  Towering walls and giant slices of shade, and a myriad of sun baked stone pathways that all seem to lead to some crazy blue glimpse of the sea. And these guys added just the right amount of beautiful, personal styling to set it off. This is a small selection of images from the day, from those quiet morning moments before the rooftop ceremony, gin-fuelled flamenco reception, dinner and speeches and our trip down to the water’s edge as the sun disappeared (and everyone went down a neon lit tunnel for a rave in a cave).

This place used to be a military fortress, designed to keep enemies out. I can’t really think of a better way to exorcise its more serious historical vibes than than to fill it with friends and dancing and love.

A few days ago I broke the festive limbo between Christmas and New Year to shoot my last wedding of 2017, at Manchester Town Hall. The pictures I took there will be my last inside that beaut of a building for quite some time (given it will close its doors in a couple of weeks for repairs and restoration that will take years to complete). I was only shooting for a few hours so after everyone had gone on I popped back in and just sat for a bit, watching the light and remembering all the insanely happy moments I’ve photographed within those insanely tiled walls. I know I’m not the only one to wonder how many hands worked how many hours to put those tiles and bricks in place. Or how on earth you make curtains that long. It’s a special place, and it makes those who stand within it feel special. I’ve seen it evoke pride and fondness in so many and, despite its grandeur, I’ve always found it to be a building that makes people feel welcome, rather than out of place. At once in awe and at home. A bit like the city it represents.

It’s a two way street though, I think. A building makes people feel a certain way, and the people that shape it, inhabit it, take care of it, or simply choose to be there – even just for a few hours – add something of their own. So, to me at least, part of our Town Hall’s specialness is because of all those people who have chosen to pass through and stand within it, together. Smiling, laughing, crying, marvelling at the bricks above them and the people next to them. Layers upon layers of human touch. I hope that’s all still there, after the pipes are fixed.

So, to feed my nostalgia, I thought I’d share one from my Town Hall archive. I only shot for a few hours for James and Laura, as this was just the beginning of their wedding adventure. The legal bit. Done with immense style and love, and a few nearest and dearest, they had their ceremony at the Town Hall, then went for a spin round the block to carry on celebrations at The Gotham Hotel. After that (and a bit of a rest) they all got on a plane and carried on celebrations under blue Spanish skies, which are up next… and admittedly quite nice to see at the moment, even if only on a screen.

LUCY LITTLE PHOTOGRAPHY

A London pub. A ridiculously amazing black and gold Temperley dress. An even more ridiculously amazing person wearing it. Bridesmaids in black. The most bighearted, loveable guy, glancing out of the window to see The Cab arrive. Their guests shaking hands, then their shaking hands as the words are repeated. And everyone smiles and smiles and every room is full to the brim with love. Polish cherry booze ready for toasting. Roast dinners for wedding tea. Big pub windows and even bigger glasses of wine. The proudest sister standing to speak and standing ovations for best men, one in his socks, arms aloft. Walks to red bushes down the street and (me) trying not to be run over by double decker buses while taking pictures of the brilliantly lovely wedding party. (Thank you bus herding gang of dreams). The best not-a-wedding-band sirens calling everyone to the dancefloor. The longest pork pie I’ve ever seen. Flowers and chutneys from mum’s deft fingers. Hands reaching for the ceiling, for each other, for old times, new times, singing louder than the song playing… and did someone just remember how to breakdance?

A hundred more memories. Easy. Only one day like this though.

Ula and James got married.

Bobby + Jayne, wedding day two (the big one), and we’re in the woods for this one. I challenge anyone to spend an hour with these two and not fall in love with them. It’s like basking in the warm brightness of two very lovely and funny friends that you haven’t seen for a while and you’re just so glad you’re in their company again. No wonder guests travelled from across the globe to come and celebrate with them. It was beautiful, wild, hilarious and unforgettable. I’m so grateful I was asked to capture it all.
